If I’m going to talk about God songs I better not fail to mention Toby Mac. Toby Mac is an innovator in the Christian music scene. The God songs he performs have an energy that very few can match up to. From the days of DC Talk which started with a hip hop sound that later evolved into a rockin guitar driven Christian rock sound to today’s sound. Toby Mac sound has continued to change and evolve into something that has a great sound.

Toby Mac was born Kevin Michael McKeehan in 1964 in Virginia. Toby Mac is an award winning singer producer and song writer. Many know TobyMac from DC Talk originally. He has also lead an impressive solo career that produced some excellent God songs. TMac also has been married since 1994 and is the proud father of five children.

Toby Mac is an award winning performer that has enjoyed much success both with DC Talk and in his solo career. He is also the president of a record label Gotee Records. Toby Mac has even authored a couple of books as well as various popular God songs.

You know when I write these posts I feel the need to put some background information (not sure if it is necessary) then I ramble and this and that. The truth is I talk about Christian music artists and the God songs they perform because I like the way they sound. TobyMac is an excellent performer. The God songs he releases whether solo or the stuff he did with DC Talk for a decade have all been great. If you don’t have TobyMac discs in your collection of God songs you probably should. If you don’t have them all you should think about getting them.

A couple of the Toby Mac songs that I really like are “Lose My Soul” with Kirk Franklin from the album “Portable Sounds” I know it’s one his slower ones, but it really is pretty touching and kind of makes me think. Another one of the God songs I like is the Kirk Franklin song that features TobyMac “I Am God” that is a jam I really dig. “Phenomenon” is a pretty good tune.” I’m not even sure what all TobyMac God songs I like. I definitely think there is more good than anything.

The album “Tonight” is scheduled for release in February. The first time I heard “City On Our Knees” (the first single from “Tonight”) I wasn’t sure about it I mean the lyrics are great I just wasn’t completely sure about the music. So I listened to it a couple more times, and I really like it. It wasn’t what I expected at first but it really grows on you. I heard “Showstopper” and “Funky Jesus Music” on YouTube and these are some good God songs. I look forward to TobyMac’s new album “Tonight” he’s even doing a tour with Skillet to promote that I hope to make it to.

TobyMac does great God songs and has for years getting the message out through his Christian songs. I’m not sure if you would call him Christian rock, Christian Rap, Christian hip hop or something else. I call him an entertaining and talented musician that does Christian music that you should check out if you haven’t.

My disc collection includes more than God songs. I listen to just about everything. I just find my mood is better when I listen to songs that glorify god. It’s much easier with the quality of Christian music today. Kutless is a Christian band that is really good.

I first heard Kutless on a Tooth and Nail compilation album. It was a great album that had Skillet Toby Mac and a bunch of others. I can’t remember the name of it right now I’ll post about it later. It’s the disc that got me back into Christian music. One song that really stood out was “Your Touch” by Kutless. This was their first single and is still a great God song. I think “Your Touch” is one of the best Kutless songs.

Kutless is a Christian band from Portland, Oregon. Formed in 2000 they released the self titled “Kutless” in 2002. Kutless has released albums just about every year since. There have been quite a few personnel changes over the years, but Kutless continues to produce God songs with a good sound. The latest worship album “It is Well” is pretty good. It’s a bit more mellow than I prefer. “It is Well” is a Kutless disc worth having, for when you’re in the mood for more mellow laid back worship songs.

Anymore when I buy new CD’s I try to find Christian songs that have a sound I’m into. Not all God songs are created equal, but I’ve had good luck lately. Kutless, TFK, and Skillet they are all on my playlist and I think it really helps my mood to listen to some of the top Christian music. I must admit I am still sometimes surprised at the quality of the God songs that these Christian rock band release.

What God songs am I listening to today? I popped “The Art of Breaking” in the disc player today. Seems like a good time to post about Thousand Foot Krutch and their great Christian songs. TFK is a band out of Canada currently consisting of Trevor McNevan, Joel Bruyere and Steve Augustine. They’ve been called alternative Christian music or a Christian rock band or Christian metal and others labels. I don’t care what you call them they rock. TFK has released five studio albums “That’s What People Do”(1998), “Set It Off”(2000), “Phenomenon “(2003), ”The Art of Breaking”(2005)“The Flame In All Of Us”(2007), and “ Welcome to the Masquerade”(2009).

“The Art of Breaking” is my favorite Thousand Foot Krutch Album. Move was a bit of an overplayed God song but I still love it. “Go” is another one of Thousand Foot Krutch songs that I really like. Actually the whole album is good packed full of good God songs.
That’s not to say the others are not good they all include great God songs. I mean Rawkfist is a classic Thousand Foot Krutch song. The new disc “Welcome to the Masquerade” is great album and its growing on me I really dig “Fire it Up.” Basically Thousand Foot Krutch has a great album catalog full of Christian songs. I don’t feel any of their albums disappoint.

Not all Thousand Foot Krutch lyrics deliver the message in a straight forward in your face manner; some songs like Move and Smackdown require a bit more thought. I think this provides for a great deal of thought and reflection. I mean really its win win. God songs that praise and glorify God, deliver Christ’s message and jam.
Thousand Foot Krutch has had God songs featured in many mainstream avenues. Video games, feature films, movie trailers, TV shows, what a great way to open a door to expose more people to Jesus.

With rumors of trouble at the Gospel Music Association it seems they are trying new ways to raise money to make up for the increasing deficit. Hopefully they can sort things out. I mean the Dove awards are an important part of recognizing some of the best God songs. I have no idea what is true and what is rumor about the goings on at the GMA . I think by looking at the auctions listings it is pretty obvious that they are out of touch. Nothing against Amy Grant or Michael W. Smith they are an important part of what Christian music is today. The fact that they are donating time and an experience for bidders is wonderful. The Christmas Coffee with Amy Grant VIP Experience sounds great for any Amy Grant fan it is currently the highest bid in the auction. Coming in second is recording time with Michael W. Smith, a great opportunity to record some God songs in Smith’s home studio.

I’m just not sure that any of the items are all that relevant. As I said earlier I don’t mean to insult fans of the Christian music artists that have donated things for the auctions. I just wonder is the GMA losing touch. If the rumors are true would it be for the best for a “new guard” to take control of the GMA. Where is a day with Skillet or Kutless? How about a day to hang out with TFK? I might be inspired to bid on a couple hour BS session with Thousand Foot Krutch about their God Songs.

In my opinion which I know means all of squadoosh I feel that a big opportunity is being squandered by the GMA. Why not capitalize on the fact that now more than ever Christian acts are reaching audiences on the other side of the big high fence between secular and Christian music? Consumers are speaking with their wallets at the record shop so it should be obvious what would raise the most money.

Check out the auction what are your thoughts on the items? Please understand I’m not faulting the items that are there or the artists that donated them I just think there are some missing. I may even go over and bid on the Epiphone autographed by MercyMe.
